The level of work you're doing is tough, so please don't push yourself harder than you need to. Breaks are important!!
I've been very grateful for the information you share about the activities of our members of Congress (MOCs) since I haven't known about most of it. That got me thinking about several things.
(1) I'm a very politically engaged person, so why *didn't* I know about these things? How much do they publicize what they're doing, especially regular things like the Democratic Download, Repping the Rep, and podcasts? How entertaining are they (which, sadly, is important) and do they offer engagement for people to believe they're doing something and keep them coming back?
(2) What constitutes actual fighting versus what is a job task or personal amplification? In other words, how much is this work is performative (or an actual duty) instead of something that actually makes a difference? Even as politically engaged as I've been for years, I still don't know what the actual job duties are of MOCs in normal times. Are they required to do things like the Democratic Download? Do letters like the one they just sent to Hegseth make a difference? What happens if they're just ignored? I know they sit on committees and vote on policy but how do they make those decisions? I follow my rep and see her visiting daycares, schools, hospitals, etc. but am not sure if those visits translate into policy or if they're just good public relations. In other words, what SHOULD our Dem MOCs be doing versus what they are doing? What is normal activity instead of what needs to happen to combat fascism?
I realize you may not have the answers to any or all of this but thought I'd throw it out there for discussion.
As a last comment, while I'm glad the media is covering the arrest of the Newark mayor, I've been disappointed that they've mostly omitted the role of the 3 NJ reps in trying to keep him safe. I watched the video and they all showed bravery and commitment. Why aren't they getting more press, especially the 80-year-old rep who literally put her body (given how small and delicate she is) on the line?
Again, thanks for all of your hard work! Enjoy your weekend!
I’ll start with saying Repping the Rep is my thing, I just chose a random rep each week that I think most people don’t know very well.
Secondly, I find these stories because they ARE amplifying them, it’s just that no one else is, For instance Democratic Daily Download is reposted by many reps every single day. There’s not much more they can do than that. So if they post about what they’re doing and influencers would rather talk about how dems aren’t doing anything, of course you’ll never hear about it. I blame other influencers for you not knowing these things, and obviously traditional media plays a role as well.
It’s not like I’m trying very hard. I have starter packs with all their accounts on Blue Sky and I look through that every day and that’s how I find stories. They’re posting them, people just aren’t amplifying them, or if they are, they’re doing it to make fun of them.
I mean everything they’re doing is their job, oversight is part of their job, floor speeches are part of their job, etc but that doesn’t make it useless or not worth praise. It’s working within the parameters of their job to push back harder, but it’s still technically their job. I don’t know how to answer that one.
