So, today is 100 days since I started this series. That means I have shown you around 300 wins. That’s an awful lot of wins. I hope you’ve been celebrating them as they’ve happened.
Thank you so much for all the support these last hundred days, and here’s to 100 more!
I can only do this because of your support, both monetary and otherwise, if you want to support me monetarily,
A More Perfect Union is paying for 300 billboards near the entrances of many National Parks all around the country to show how the staffing cuts are affecting the parks. The billboards went up yesterday.
This one is outside Death Valley in CA
This one is outside Biscayne in FL:
You get the idea. Hopefully many people who didn’t know what was happening before, but enjoy the national parks will now.
Bravo More Perfect Union!
Denver Colorado is not an official sanctuary city, but they are sure showing how to be one. Yesterday afternoon, Monday May 6, the city council voted unanimously to pause the police department’s contract with Flock Group Inc. They are a group that makes red light cameras that read license plates, and the city council decided that at this moment in time, any technology that can read license plates can be used by ICE.
Council Member Kevin Flynn said:
I know some hit and run cases that were resolved, and I think most prominently in the news last year, the $12 million High Park jewelry burglary was solved as a direct result of this system, so we know that it can help solve crime. But in light of some changes since the pilot began, not that there weren't concerns about surveillance before that, but I think since maybe Jan. 20 of this year, those concerns are greatly heightened and have a new have a new reality about them.
Hopefully, many other cities will follow suit.
I have been putting off sharing the Texas municipal election wins because I didn’t want to give you dozens of links. This isn’t the absolute perfect link, it leaves out a lot too, but it’s an organization we should all be supporting and they do a decent job of breaking down most of the major wins. So this is what Progress Texas has to say:
A pattern emerged—not only in DFW, but statewide—in which school board members and candidates who had taken part in the MAGA trend of banning books found themselves losing the favor of voters. For North Texas, this included former Tarrant County Democratic Party Chair Deborah Peoples winning outright from a field of six candidates a seat on Fort Worth’s City Council, and MAGA wannabe Julie Short, having been roundly criticized for enlisting outside right wing money in her bid to unseat Mansfield Mayor Michael Evans, fell well short of that goal (if you’ll pardon the pun).
And it really just kept going and going. I’ve seen a handful of losses, but that’s about it. I think the fact that Texas has a new Dem Chair helps a lot. The run offs for the races that weren’t outright wins are happening in early June, so mark your calendar if you live in Texas and let’s do this again!
Thanks for joining me on this 100 day journey! There really have been wins for all 100 of those days, even if they felt farther away some than others.
Onto 101 tomorrow.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
As someone who lived in Texas for 24 years, the wins across the state are HUGE and a long time coming! Of course, most of the races were non-partisan (in theory) so we'll have to see if it translates into partisan voting in the midterms. I know Kendall Scudder (the new TDP chair) and he's amazing, so I have no doubt he'll do great things. The state of Texas politics is very important because if we can make changes there, other red states will follow.
For tomorrow, possibly: Salt Lake is adding pride designs to the city’s official flags so they can continue to fly them. https://www.threads.com/@slcmayor/post/DJVO4TXy9qr?xmt=AQF0DIuVuhm-f74c2kYepQfqQi6gF5IvdzOwXW7ou2Urww
