I’ve started reading physical books again, so that’s my personal win. What’s yours? Your personal wins are just as important as any other win, so don’t diminish them!
As for three non personal wins,
Lowell & Associates is a new lawfirm started by Abbe Lowell that was announced yesterday. They will be mainly representing institutions and people who are standing up to DT. They are also hiring people like Rachel Cohen who resigned from Skadden Arps when they bowed down. Lowell & Associates is going to be an absolute force to be reckoned with.
This year it was pretty much a given that some awful anti-LGBTQIA+ bills were going to pass in Florida. Except, it wasn’t, because, they didn’t. Every single anti-LGBTQIA+ bill that was introduced this session failed. Here’s what Equality Florida said about this amazing win:
This win didn’t happen overnight. Going into the 2025 legislative session, we knew the odds were against us. We were facing the largest Republican supermajority in Florida’s history, and many of the 21 of 22 anti-LGBTQ bills we defeated last year were expected to return — this time with even more momentum fueled by a hostile federal climate.
But they didn’t.
With tireless advocacy and shifting power alignments in Tallahassee, opponents only filed a fraction of the anti-LGBTQ bills seen in 2023 and 2024. Our resistance held off those bad bills from even being filed this year!
So if you spent even a second raising alarm about these bills, you helped play a role in making this possible and should be really really proud.
Karen Attiah’s Columbia class on Race Media and International Affairs was canceled, and she went public with that only a couple weeks ago. Last week she decided to run the class herself over the summer, and in only a couple days over 500 people signed up for the class, and even more signed up to help pay for students to attend the class. This will definitely be the first of many to come.
I wonder if the other side will ever realize that the more they try to tear us down, the more they lift us up.
So those are just some of today’s wins. And as always, they just prove that our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
And 3 book-banning members were just ousted from a school board in Texas.
So good! My personal win is that I finally met up IRL with some online book club members. We went shopping at an independent book store and bought frequently banned books to add to Free Little Libraries in our neighborhoods!
