So, a cool story about one of today’s wins, I rarely ever look at my personal email, something I’m trying to get better about, because it’s mostly just donation requests from Dems, which totally have their place, but I am nowhere near making enough to have donations be a priority. Anyway, I was actually reading all emails instead of just trashing them in bulk and I came across an email that was about a win, from the last few days, that I had not heard about. The email was from the Sierra Club.
Thurs, May 22 - Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed the “Protect Wild Bison” bill. It re-classifies bison as wildlife and livestock so they are protected and can’t be hunted. This is a huge win, especially for the indigenous population as they are an important part of their culture and they were dangerously close to being added to the endangered species list.
Fri May 16 -Biden appointee Judge Stephen Locher blocked a significant portion of Iowa's Don’t Say Gay bill which was signed into law back in 2023. The law banned all things queer for K-6.
It doesn’t get rid of it entirely, but it does do things like allow for GSAs and make it so that not talking about gender or sexuality must be a blanket rule, meaning you can’t talk about cis or straight people either. Though, these things can be talked about incidentally, like if a book has a queer person in it, that’s fine, it just can’t be the main topic. It’s not as good as we’d like, but that doesn’t make it less of a win.
Ongoing (in honor of Memorial Day) - Project Benjamin is replacing the crosses erroneously placed on the grave of Jewish soldiers with Jewish stars. And it does seem erroneous, they did their best, but during WWII, it just wasn’t safe for Jews to admit they were Jews while fighting, so a lot of mistakes were made. It is a mitzvah that they are being corrected, even this many years later. Dana Bash attended one of the ceremonies.
So those are some of today’s wins. I hope they give you hope this Memorial Day.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
“ it is a mitzvah that they are being corrected, even this many years later. ”
thank you for all three stories, Good news is much welcome during these dark days
I particularly liked the idea of correcting errors even many years later, If we want to keep striving toward a multiracial pluralistic democracy, then we need to acknowledge errors of the past regarding Indigenous people, slavery, women being second class citizens, etc, Much has been done to rectify these errors, but much is still needed. The current push back agains equality and establishing a privileged class must be stopped,
Tyranny cannot be appeased. It never works.
Tyranny only wins when we submit.
Solidarity is how we win.
