Today we learned that President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, so that instantly makes it a pretty hard day. These wins probably can’t make him heal faster, though our immune systems are stronger when we aren’t feeling despair, but maybe they can help you cope with the new a little better.
And if you’re not affected by this news, well, please keep that opinion to yourself, now is not the time.
Yesterday, the ACLU unveiled their “Freedom To Be” monument. It’s a massive quilt, inspired by the AIDS quilt project that was first displayed on the National Mall on Oct 11, 1987. This quilt is about the joy fight and resilience of the trans community. You can find out more about the project here. And just a heads up, I was unexpectedly overcome with emotion watching this ABC news report on the quilt, so you might be too.
Yesterday, Washington State Governor, Bob Ferguson signed the “Recycling Reform Act,” into law. With this signing, all three West Coast states have adopted EPR packaging programs. This puts the onus of what happens to physical packaging on the company rather than the municipalities. It is their job to figure out how to make sure their packaging can be recycled. The law will also require all residences that have a garbage can to also have a recycling bin. You can learn more about the timeline of the law’s implementation here
Mere hours ago, Centrist Nicusor Dan won the Romanian presidential election. This runoff election had been delayed because of evidence of Russian interference, and as of this morning, it was assumed that the far right candidate was going to win. That could not have been further from what actually went down. Dan won with 54% of the vote while George Simion, a DT idolized, lost with 46%. This is yet another example of the world wide rejection to DT.
So, while this probably didn’t lift your spirits as much as it might some days, I hope it made you feel a bit better about what’s going on in the world and our ability to fight back and build the world we want to live in.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
So very sorry to hear that President Biden is ailing. He certainly did his best. and in his brief time as president installed many, many wins, not just for Dems but for everyone. Thank you, Ariella, for another excellent installment -- you are the bees knees!
The more rejection of DT and his ilk, the better.
