Yesterday was really incredible. Even though some horrific things happened, the vast majority of the 2k protests were 100% peaceful, even in cities where there were incidents elsewhere. We are creating a movement, now we just have to sustain it.
Hopefully, this series helps with that.
Here are three of today’s wins!
Fri, June 13 - Kansas state court of appeals 3 judge panel ruled unanimously that trans Kansans can’t be barred from changing their gender marker on their license. To get a little more into the weeds, they lifted a district court injunction. In the opinion they say:
The KDOR has been allowing this process since 2007, through 5 governors and at least 16 different legislative sessions. If the KDOR is violating the law now, it was violating it then. Yet the AG took no action to stop this alleged irreparable harm for 16 years. No one was able to bring forward any instance of the feared harm of misidentification of 21 criminals in the last 16 years or even the potential that it could be a problem. Instead, the evidence was overwhelming that there was no harm.
Basically, if this is a problem now, it must have been a problem then, if not, you’re kinda just making it up. Love that argument so much.
Thurs, June 12 - Montgomery County Correctional Facility, in Pennsylvania, will no longer work with ICE unless they have a warrant. Before, ICE had 4 hours to pick someone up who was being let out on bail. Now, they have to show that they have a signed warrant, and only then will the correctional facility keep them detained for 24 hours. WHYY asked the Warden, Sean McGee if there was a specific case that sparked this:
No particular case, it’s just there’s been a lot of discussion. I mean, it’s a hot topic today, right? And that’s not just here in Montgomery County, but across the nation. So this is something that we’ve had a lot of discussion surrounding, and we think that moving in this direction will make us consistent in the way we deal with the agencies that do lodge detainers on just not someone with an immigration matter, but any other jurisdiction as well.
Whatever the reason, it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Would be nice if they wouldn’t work with ICE at all, but a warrant is a warrant. However, without one, they’re not welcome. And that’s going to protect a lot of lives.
Today - Protesters formed a picket line outside the ICE office in San Francisco’s South of Market yesterday and today to keep the office closed as immigrants got a text asking them to come during business hours.
The text reads:
Please present yourself in the San Francisco ISAP Office at 478 Tehama St., San Francisco, CA 94103 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2025, or Sunday, June 15, 2025. If you do not present yourself according to instructions it will be considered an infraction
So these incredible protesters have made sure the office can’t open cause there’s just too many people in front of the door. PSL Bay Area, 50501 SF, Mission Action SF and Bay Area Resistance formed a picket line in front of the office.
So those are today’s wins. They make me really happy cause I love the hyper local ones you probably haven’t heard about at all the best.
What were some of your favorite wins today?
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
Magnificent!
Thanks Ariella for putting these forward and for your remarks that clarify the legal arguments and the wins.
I wish more ppl would read you and comment and encourage you. I don't have $250 to be one of your "founders". I don't know what you can do to gain more visibility. But for me you are number 1.
Oh yeah, Saturday June 14th was the turning point. We're just getting started.
