Breathe. Just breathe, and think about something going right for you personally. It could be you really enjoyed a book you’re reading, or maybe you didn’t respond to a mean comment and just blocked the account instead, or whatever, my point, is, big or small, it’s important to remind ourselves that we are still here, we are still alive, and we are still fighting.
And there were at least three larger wins today too.
(I hope that all made sense)
AEW star, Brody King, wore an “Abolish ICE” shirt last month, and it turned into something bigger. He sold the shirt with all proceeds being donated to Local Hearts Foundation, a Long Beach CA foundation helping immigrants through mutual aid of things like delivering groceries so they don’t have to leave their house, and paying street vendors enough so they don’t have to work that day and can go home. Absolutely incredible group doing incredible work. And Brody King raised $27,758.00 and just sent off the donation today.
Yesterday - Washington State Democratic Party posted on socials for Disability Pride Month. It’s a powerful message, especially when a bill just passed that will hurt the disabled community disproportionately.
Mon, June 30 - Ohio Gov Mike DeWine signed the ‘26-’27 budget. Ohio is a state that allows for line item vetos and he had several, including vetoing a paragraph that would censor certain library material. For the Restriction of Public Libraries veto, he wrote:
This item would place vague restrictions on public libraries in an effort to regulate the placement of certain material within a public general circulation library. No child should have access to Page 56 of 57 inappropriate materials or to materials that their parents or guardians deem inappropriate. In Ohio, we have strong laws on obscenity and material harmful to juveniles, and the DeWineTressel Administration expects those laws to be enforced. Therefore, a veto of this item is in the public interest.
He also said in his press conference about the budget:
I think as parents or grandparents, no one wants their child to have a book or something that is inappropriate, something that is obscene, but I just felt that the language just does not work
You can watch the whole thing below, if you feel so inclined.
Clearly he thinks what is already in place is clear enough. Now, the legislature can override his veto, but as of right now, they’re not indicating it as a priority.
And a bonus silver lining style win, after the betrayal bill passed, we’ve definitely got our messaging for the next 16 months. And we need to drive it home every single day.
I hope these wins helped make your day better. There are always wins even if you have to go searching for them!
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
I called someone a racist titwad on here and somebody liked my comment, so I feel pretty good about myself. On a more serious note, I see a lot of organizing going on in response to today’s events, which is heartening, even if I hate what people are responding to.
Yes, July is Disability Pride Month! Unfortunately, the poster says "June is Disability Pride Month" and people on Bluesky are duking it out over the typo... BUT... I say we should celebrate empathy and kindness every month towards all humans. (Well... er, except a few MAGA non-humans who somehow weaseled their way into positions of power)
