Today I learned that I don’t need to film with a ringlight in my face. I can have two lights off to the side and that way nothing is actually in front of me, which is great, cause the light absolutely gives me a headache. Fingers crossed that this works!
Here are three wins!
Wed July 2 - Rhode Island Governor, Daniel McKee, signed their Freedom to Read Act into law. Laura Benitez at PEN America describes it as:
Rhode Island’s Freedom to Read Act is the strongest of any freedom to read laws enacted to date. We applaud the advocates and legislators who brought this legislation to fruition, and Governor McKee for signing it into law. The law’s robust protections for librarians, writers, and readers set an exemplary model that we hope to see other states replicate/ As the Trump administration and book-banning groups continue their attacks on libraries and free speech, we urge legislators nationwide to make their states safe havens for the freedom to read. You can never be too prepared to stop book bans.
It’s the strongest act because of its direct language against censorship, which the law mentions directly 11 times.
Fri July 11 - Los Angeles City Mayor, Karen Bass, signed an executive order to provide more support for the LA immigrant community. The biggest thing the order does is:
Requires all departments to bolster protocols and training in compliance with the City’s law prohibiting use of City resources in immigration enforcement and deliver preparedness plans within 2 weeks.
Or at least it’s the biggest thing in my opinion because she’s acknowledging that the LAPD have not been handling this the right way up until now, and she’s absolutely not okay with that.
Thurs July 3 - Yeoman Wilder, a youth baseball coach in Washington Heights NYC who also has a law degree, protected his team when ICE approached them at practice.
There are a lot of bad people these days, but we have to remember to look for the helpers, as Mr. Rogers said.
So I hope, as always, you are reminded that we always have wins, every single day.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
Thank you so much for this, these reminders of god make it a little easier to handle the bad
I look forward to these every day. Had a rough day but these made it better
