Alright, I have to be honest, I usually find my stories through my Threads FYP, but today, my FYP consisted of complaints that the protests weren’t good enough, and then just all about Hegseth (the second part is warranted, but still.) But I hope these wins still remind you that good things are happening every single day, even if it will probably take a few days before I know what the good things were from today.
On Friday Utah Judge Laura Scott rules that the disgustingly named “Utah Fits All” school voucher program is unconstitutional. In the ruling she said:
[Because] the Program is a legislatively created, publicly funded education program aimed at elementary and secondary education, it must satisfy the constitutional requirements applicable to the ‘public education system’ set forth in the Utah Constitution. The Program is not ‘open to all children of the state.’
It’s nice when GOP legislators try to do something unconstitutional and they don’t get away with it.
Ten days ago the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that those under 21 can no longer be given life without the possibility of parole. In the ruling, the Judges explain their decision is about brain development:
Defendants argue that the mandatory nature of their sentences violates Michigan’s prohibition against “cruel or unusual punishment,” … where we held that, under our state Constitution, mandatoryLWOP sentences are cruel or unusual when applied to 18-year-olds. We agree with defendants and extend Parksto individuals who were 19 or 20 years old at the time of the crime for which they were convicted. … Late adolescents who are 19 or 20 years old, as a class, share with 18-year-olds the same mitigating characteristics of late-adolescent brain development.
This will currently affect 600 prisoners, according to Bolts Magazine. and many many more in the future.
Ken Calvert represents CA-41 and has been in Congress for over 30 years. The past two cycles the same Democrat has run against him and though he’s gotten close, he lost both times. Four days ago, a new name announced his candidacy. His name is Tim Myers, and if you’re into music, that might sound familiar. He’s the former bassist for OneRepublic. He grew up in the district and he wants to be the one to get Ken Calvert out. And I think he has a shot at it.
Make sure you follow him everywhere so he can start getting the political name recognition he needs to do this! IG | Threads | Blue Sky
So I hope these wins still brought you joy even if they aren’t from today. I mean, if they’re still current, it doesn’t matter when they’re from, they still matter.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
This weekend’s events were never intended to be bigger than the ones on April 5, for multiple reasons. They were intended to maintain and build momentum, which certainly happened. Lots of people went to both. Plenty went to one or the other, or went to a protest on the 5th and did something else constructive on the 19th.
I was impressed that the protests on 4/19 were as big as they were especially since it was Easter weekend and a lot of folks were traveling.
