Today was one of those days I fell a bit into the doomerism. I say that just so you know that it’s not just you, some days I struggle to handle it too.
So this post is as much for me as it is for you!
Rep Jerry Nadler (NY-12)
Today begins the House recess, which means all reps will spend the next week in their districts. And Rep Nadler’s first stop was the Trans rally at Stonewall Inn against the admin’s removal of the T and Q on the website. Based on this photo it looks like he was one of the speakers.
Unfortunately, I don’t know if other reps spoke as well because there is no video. If you go to a protest, and you’re able to, please film as much of it as possible and put it on YouTube. There’s a good chance your video will be the only recording of the speeches.
Rep Adam Smith (WA-09)
Today he announced an interactive website for tracking all of DT’s actions. It has a different page for each topic, as well as a spreadsheet breaking down each order, and news from Rep Smith’s social media on that specific topic.
He also says that his team will updating the website as frequently as the news breaks.
This is incredible. It’s exactly what so many voters have been asking for. I hope other Dems promote it and help get eyes on it.
Sen Adam Schiff (CA)
I know that Adam Schiff has his reasons for confirming a handful of DT’s nominees, but I certainly don’t understand them, even given the fact that California needs FEMA.
That said, I am impressed with his latest YouTube video, which seems to be part of a series called “In Case You Missed It…”
The video is titled “[DT] Just Fired the Most Important Person You’ve Never Heard Of.” And he just explains the situation so well. It’s short, casual, engaging and doesn’t make him look out of touch with technology, which we have seen with a handful of electeds who have tried something like this.
And this not only worked visually, it also went viral. Over 400k views as of the time I’m writing this.
I really want to see videos like this weekly or more frequently from all our electeds.
Sen Tina Smith (MN)
Today she was back in her home state. She went to the University of MN to learn about cancer research that can’t be done without NIH funding. I have been really impressed with her videos, but this is probably my favorite one yet, for similar reasons to Sen Schiff’s. It’s casual, engaging and informative. Not to mention it’s not just talking about DT’s horrific orders, but how they directly affect Minnesotans, something she excels at.
And finally for today
Sen Judiciary Committee Dems
I know it’s a little confusing, but the Inspectors General have not been as dissolved as DT would like. He fired the chief of most departments, but under the chief is a deputy, and that deputy has now been promoted to acting chief since there is none. So the IG are still doing work.
Most things begin with a letter, but in this case, the Judiciary Dems are jumping right into pushing for an investigation.
The IG will say they did it independently, cause they are an independent body, but I’m positive that when senators get involved it does help speed up the process. Plus it is something Senate Dems still have the ability to do.
And those are today’s Dems fighting back. Again, as I said at the beginning, members of the House are headed home for the next week. That does not mean they won’t be working, it just means their focus is on their constituents directly rather than through legislative means. They should be holding town halls, attending protests and events and having in person meetings with constituents.
If you are able, please find a way to be somewhere your rep will be. This is your best chance to really let them know how you feel, don’t miss out!
