First, I just want to say that most of today’s stories were sent to me by followers!
I love that you’re all starting to look for stories that don’t have enough attention! Keep it up!
And make sure that you are promoting them yourself too, comment on the post before sending it to me, even if it’s just emojis, helps!
Without further ado…
Reps Shomari Figures (AL-02), Teri Sewell (AL-07) and Hakeem Jefrries (NY-08)
successfully got the Admin to remove the Montgomery Bus Station, which houses the Freedom Rides Museum removed from the list of leases the government will stop paying!
We’re not going to save every building, and yes, that is very scary, but we must lift up those who work to save all the buildings we can. And this one especially has so much history and is vital to the story of the civil rights movement.
Reps Mark Takano (CA-39) and Mike Thompson (CA-04)
chatted during an episode of the WTFShow. This is a show from the House Dems that is uploaded every Wed, Thurs and Fri for the first 100 days of the Admin. Each day there several different reps chatting either with each other or interviewing a guest. Sometimes it’s a YouTube vid and sometimes it’s an IG live. So you definitely want to keep your eyes peeled.
One of today’s conversations was between Takano and Thompson discussed how the cuts will effect veterans and education. Definately worth a watch!
Reps Marc Veasey (TX-33) and Greg Landsman (OH-01)
Are the hosts of a new podcast from the New Democrat Coalition “The Fly-In.” It’s absolutely brilliant. You feel like you’re watching a talk show. They have segments, like “Three Big Things” where they discuss three things we need to know that are happening this week, and others. It’s so inviting and informative too.
I honestly cannot recommend this enough and I am so excited about all the new podcasts from our Dems.
DNC Chair Ken Martin
Shared his daily mantra “You can remake the world daily” and where it came from. Look, this isn’t flashy, it isn’t high energy, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important or engaging.
Martin has been a progressive organizer since high school and this video gives you a glimpse into the kind of chair he already is and will continue to be, and where his passion for changing the world came from. It’s a short video, so please take a minute to watch it.
Who knows, maybe you’ll come away with a new mantra too.
House Dem Leadership
Held a press conference to kick off their annual retreat. My hope is that on this retreat, those who are leaning in will be able to influence those who aren’t there yet, and hopefully they’ll start recess with more of a willingness to bend the standards.
The press conference consisted of Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), Caucus Chairman, Pete Aguilar (CA-33), Whip Katherine Clark (MA-05), Vice chair Ted Lieu (CA-37), Assistant leader Joe Neguse (CO-02) and DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01)
Lieu urged and almost demanded that Dems in the Senate vote against the cloture for the CR, which seems to be exactly what’s happening.
Check out the full press conference!
Sen Adam Schiff (CA)
Has been incredibly impressive when coming up with new ways to get attention. And today is no different. He knows that new media doesn’t really care about press releases. Young people just won’t take the time to read something written in that format. So, he’s trying something different. He started a Substack called “Schiff Notes” and it’s basically a less formal press release. It’s short, informative, and easy to read.
A lot of people are already shitting on it, asking how he has the time, I really hope they know that he’s not the one actually writing it, but I guess many people don’t know how many staff members our electeds have (government classes are SO important).
But I do hope, now that I explained it to you, you are as excited for this as I am, and hopefully more electeds will follow suit. I mean, I read press releases, but I can’t say I enjoy doing it. This is so much better!
Check out his post and see if you agree with me
Rep Bill Keating (MA-09)
Showed the true meaning of allyship yesterday.
In a hearing in the Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Europe, Chairman Keith Self (TX-03) recognized Rep Sarah McBride (DE) by misgendering her. When she misgendered him in response, he doubled down, and that’s when Bill Keating got involved.
After a back and forth, he said, if Self wouldn’t treat McBride with respect, he wouldn’t participate in the hearing. And so, instead of treating her with respect, Self ended the hearing.
I’d like to also note that Self doubled down on Twitter, but, the comments aren’t all that supportive. Even some transphobes are saying he could have just been respectful. It’s kinda encouraging to see.
Also, Leader Hakeem Jeffries gets a shout out for this one too. He reposted the video on his IG, so that it got as much attention as possible.
I hope that some people who see this feel more confident that Dems will not be abandoning the trans community like so many have feared.!
So those are just a small amount of the Dems doing the work today. I have four more stories that I found, that I didn’t even have a chance to get to.
Please remember, don’t wait for me to post. Lift up everyone who deserves to be lifted up whether I post about them or not.
Our voices are our superpower, but only when we use them!
This is fantastic. Sharing it on FB!
Thank you for providing all this info. I was particularly excited to see a new Substack by Senator Adam Schiff from CA!. Following and sharing with others.
